Love & Life & U & Me

5 03 2007

In this assignment …
Design a greeting card related to the theme LOVE
The Card should convey the theme primarily through colours with minimal use of photographs and other visual elements

My prototype design …
Since there are so many western v card online, I want to try something more oriental, something suiltable for the chinese valentine day.. It was hard at first to source for sample online so I turn to chinese wedding cards for ideas. My concept was to show the simple love between the a guy and a gal. Then the ying-yang symbol came to my mind. Having a heart that enclose the ying-yang simply symbolize that… However, that was not enough i needed more.. butterfly was something that represents first love. In chinese belief when one is attracted to it’s first love, it’s like an attraction that draw a butterfly to a flower pones.. Lastly, what other better way to express LOVE is to pen the word down … I have chosen the traditional chinese font for it’s meaningful representation. (See prototype design) The chinese character LOVE (“Ai” in chinese) is actually formed by another character HEART(“Xi” bold in red). This can also symbolize LOVE from the heart.

STOP Poster Abuse !

26 02 2007

After today presentation, I got some feedback regarding the colour of my text. Some had problem trying to read the catch line as it was hard to tell from the background. Another point was the choice for my colour red on certain text. Since it was used for my catch line (the most important point) I should not reuse the colour on other non-important details as it might mislead the audience attention while reading the poster.Below are some points I have amended :

  1. The shadow figure is lighten
  2. A shadow effect is applied to the catch line
  3. The main box is filled with a semi-transparent fill
  4. “Illegal download” changed to black font
  5. The red hand is slightly refined

After some consideration, I decided to change my first theme from “STOP Piracy” to “STOP Computer Abuse”. This will allow me to express more means of computer misused with my design. Moreover, I feel that it is not necessary to relate piracy with a pirate. In fact the one who usually abuse the computer is the user himself. Thus, I decided to remove the image of the pirate and replaced it with a shadow. The intention is to use the shadow to represent two figures in this case one can interpret it as the hacker who is tempting the computer or the officer who is trying to track down the hacker. In addition, the image of a red hand clicking the mouse is to symbolize the act of catching you red handed. Similarly, I believe the colour red will help to draw the readers’ attention from far.

As for the second idea, I think that it is easier to deliver the message with Flush 2 than Flush 1 as 2 is less complicated and clearer compared to 1. The idea here is to highlight the similarity with the use of colorings. Simply by placing both the toilet bowl and jackpot side by side made the comparison more obvious. This will also help to balance out the space in the poster.

So much for the one week break, back to another assignment …
This week task: Design a poster that has a message: STOP, Prevent or Save …

Before I start to work on the design, I must first identify the role and the purpose of my poster. In lecture, we learnt that the difference between the poster and other advertising media is that the poster speaks to the audience “on the move.”  Unlike newspaper ads, magazine ads, and brochures are designed for the reader who has time to read these ads. Therefore, a poster must be able to capture the attention and get the message across in a matter of seconds.

As for the purpose, I wish to promote a sense of awareness on some social issues.

Gathering of Ideas:
Being a SOC student, my first thought was the problem of piracy faced in the info-com industry. Another idea was generated by the recent anti-gambling campaign aired on TV. Thus I had two ideas: STOP piracy and STOP gambling

Here are some sketches of my ideas

  • Shadow are applied over all the letters
  • Darker colours are used to impose a more dislike feel for the monsters.

Regardless if I agreed or disagree with your comments I still find that they are valuable for me to evaluate myself as I try to do better in the new assignment. Thank you for all your comments and feedback. Hope to hear from you soon ^_^

Assignment 3 PDF Version [New]

Fortunately, for this assignment, I had a friend to guide me as he share his photography tips with me during our shoot at Vivo City. It was quite embarrassing at first.. but after a few shoots, we can’t b bothered at all.

Here are some tips to garb those shorts (from my friend and this cool recommended link)

  • Try position the subject off the centre to add an interesting effects to the photo (See picture 04)
  • Include a foreground object in your picture. This way you give the viewer a better feel for the distance of the object and put the distance into better perspective. (See picture 09 and 10)
  • A tripod is most recommended for a clear short but if you don’t have it useful by just try to use something to prop your elbows on to help steady the camera.

Point to note:
When you try to capture shots for non-moving object, the object orientation and perspective can help to deliver an expressive effect to the picture. (See picture 05 and 07).

The Yummy Adventure of Flobbur ! – Part 1

21 02 2007

In this assignment, I was tasked to tell a story with just ten pictures. There are two challenge I faced; planning a storyline with a twist in the end; finding the right spot to snap those pictures.

Nothing special was in my mind until I came across this action figure store that had some cool toys on sale. And there is where I found my lead character for my story

“The Yummy Adventure of Flobbur”

And the story goes …

One fine sunny day… a black spot appeared in the sky from nowhere…

Picture 01

As the spot draw closer, the sky darkens and finally it landed …

Picture 02

Something was waiting patiently in his mother-ship …

Picture 03

When the sky was clear, out came the universe “most blur” ball – Flobbur

Picture 04

As usual, Flobbur had forgotten his mission to this planet …

Picture 05

What will Flobbur do then ?
Stay tune to Part 2 on The Yummy Avdentue of Flobbur …

The Yummy Adventure of Flobbur ! – Part 2

Picture 07

Then he saw a beautiful star “calling” for help. The smile on her face so attractive that Flobbur immediately fell in love with Ms Starnie…

Picture 08
